Aloha everyone, it’s my

I hope you’re all feeling well, inspired and at peace as we approach the Christmas season.

I have quite a few original drawings here in my art studio so thought it might be time to put them up for sale. This is just a sample of drawings, but there are many more to choose from just click here

original drawings are $50 each, plus postage and handling (estimated P&H for packages sent within Australia $10, US P&H $25 and UK P&H $30)
drawings will be packaged and sent by Registered Post in mailing tubes
Size approx A3 (420 × 297mm) on 100% Acid Free 110gsm Cartridge paper. Some of the works are smaller sizes, and they will have the size next to the title.
Drawings are creating using a mechanical pencil and in some cases black marker has also been employed, or liquid pencil and charcoal.
Please note that the drawings are not absolutely perfect, and you may see imperfections. One edge of the paper has been removed from the spiral pad, but the edge will not be visible once framed.
The drawings are loose, unframed and do not include the decorative edge and title as seen below
I will display a list of any sold drawings at the end of this journal, so that you can check on availability.

aloha, I hope you are all well and feeling inspired to create!! Suddenly, or so it seems, the festive season is upon us and I see little hints of tinsel in the shops and get that little bit of excited when I hear the age old Christmas carols. Is it just me or is time flying by faster each year, perhaps Christmas is a signal for us to slow down a little and enjoy the little things that bring so much joy to our lives.

Every year I like to take the opportunity to thank the people who have supported and encouraged my creative pursuits over the years, within the redbubble community of artists and outside in the wider community, whether it was through an encouraging response to one of my paintings or by purchasing something from me to share with others or as a keepsake, perhaps it was a tweet, retweet, a blog interview, a kind word on one of my mushy poems, etc. I appreciate it and want you to know how grateful I really am. To those who have loved me, despite my foibles…i love you back, front and sideways too, thank you from my heart :)

I don’t know if I can really call life a journey, perhaps it’s more of an expedition for me, full of fact finding, with the ultimate purpose…making meaning in my life and the lives of others. When we begin any expedition, we are unsure as to what we may encounter, but we are aware (if only subconsciously) that it will require some perserverance and be quite a long trek…we try not to envisage too many dangers or traps or wild animals and hope we will be well prepared before we leave for our destination. But the most interesting times, are perhaps how we respond under difficult circumstances, like when the food runs out…when the wild animals are eyeing us off as possible food source, when we have lost our mittens and our fingers are frostbitten……these are the things we will most remember and want to retell. These are the times when our characters are forged, honed and we come to resemble ourselves, the people we were born to become. I don’t know that we like the difficult times and challenges, certainly we don’t relish them when we are going through them. But afterwards, having endured, we come through in a sense purifed by the fire, having an understanding of what truly matters and what is superfluous.

Being creative also has it’s challenges and we as much as other folks in the world, need a lot of support and understanding if we are to reach our goals and although it sounds like a blessed life, there are as many difficulties as there are possibilities. We are a sensitive type of soul and this colours our world.

So thank you to all of my friends and family for all the wonderful supportive things you have done for me and said to me throughout this year, to keep me motivated and inspired, for all your reassurance and love. My heart is full to overflowing with appreciation and love for you all.

Lately I've been re-evaluating my creative process and wanted to share a little about how I see my painting practice, how it's developed, gone a little off the beaten track and how I see the future.

About 9 years ago I began the practice of drawing and painting, discovering it's therapeutic value, and realised what a delightful hobby it was, very quickly I established a full time art practice, selling my original works on eBay and showing at local exhibitions. After some time, as with most artists these days, I searched for a place to call home on the internet, a platform where I could continue to show my work, while I developed further as an artist and a creative being.

The place I found and loved so, was redbubble (see my online art gallery and one stop print shop) I have been there for 3 years now and made many friends and met many lovely artists, friends and collectors, establishing myself online has been a whirl and a great deal of fun, also a lot of time and effort!!

I have been shown clearly through my own art practice, that drawing and painting are indeed helpful in combating symptoms of depression and anxiety and today as I was sitting in the car, mentioned to my partner that painting is sorta like my prozac :)

In the past, difficult times have always been made easier through the practice of art, and the pencil is a great microphone to use, when you want to share your feelings, but can't find your voice. That's what I've found lately.

Unfortunately, living online most of the time, becomes counterproductive to the creative process as it means you are spending energy in directions other than art, sometimes being online can be inspiring and we can draw from that deep well, our fellow artists and friends encourage us, and that's wonderful...but I have found that too much time online has the opposite effect. I have been producing less art, feeling less creative...and I'd like to get back to grass roots again, being the creative I am fond of.

Therefore I've developed a new game plan, and i'm so excited to share that with you. It seems I can have a foot in both worlds afterall.......by just managing my time a little differently. I will be spending most days drawing and painting, and counting down to October 1, 2011, when I will begin uploading (at the rate of 1 painting per day) my new works created all through the previous 7 months. For 49 days straight I will upload an average of 1 painting per day, up until Nov 19, 2011....at which time i go on extended leave throughout Christmas and begin this cycle of creating art again from 1st March 2012.

You know, it just feels wonderful to have a goal and a plan, I'll be creating for 7 months of each year, beginning March 1st, 2011... I hope to create some collections that will go into calendars, and all my fresh works will be uploaded in time for Christmas, I think that makes being online, so much more meaningful for me... 7 weeks online to upload my art, and 7 months to create while being offline, with a lovely long break in between.

I was recently listening to a youtube video on TED about designer, Stefan Sagmeister's approach to take a 12 month break each seven years, not only does he take time off, but so does his design company. He noticed that some of their designs were looking 'same/same' and they were becoming stale. Stefan felt that by introducing some time off, he could explore other ideas and have some freedom and space to work on things he wouldn't normally be able to. Some wonderful design concepts and ideas ensued during the 12 month periods, and this increased the business potential as a design company.

After working very hard at my craft for the last 9 years, and the last 3 spent online constantly producing and uploading artwork, I have decided to take a little break myself, so that I can simply immerse myself in the purest bliss of drawing. So far, it's working out really well, with less time online, i spend more of it in a creative headspace, find I am drawing a lot more, already produced some 9 drawings in the space of a couple of weeks. I think previously, i was spending a lot of time giving back to my online artist community, and while that's important, i had to realise that I was really missing the one thing that brings me the most joy, and is the most fundamental reason for my being here, that is drawing. Drawing is what gives me peace of mind, and i think that's the gift I share with the world. I am so fortunate to be able to share my heart and my thoughts through my art.

The other day, i had this little revelation, that when a pencil is available to me, it's like having a microphone in my hand. I get to say, feel, express and outwardly share what i feel in my innermost parts and dreams, I'm so enjoying this process. I'd forgotten how good it felt. It's great to make a return to the basics :)

looking forward to colouring this digitally, although i've already hand painted it...it will be fun to see what result I get with digital painting, here's a great idea, always photograph or scan your work prior to painting it, that way you can have as much fun with it as you like painting it digitally again and again and again, practicing and honing your skills...and creating different versions...fun fun fun :)

I eat cake for breakfast, oh yes I do! .....and to that I’d add, I eat/ate brekky cereal for dinner! Oh yes I did!!

So, what is the point of all this? I guess it is thinking outside the square and doing something a little creative and different….for me, it just seems natural…i see cake, my tummy talks (especially since I rarely get to eat cake as i have a condition that tells my tummy it’s not very ok to eat barley, wheat, oats or rye…oooh an d barley is my favourite dish…poor me!)

So if I happen to chance upon a gluten free cake, that’s all covered in yummy icing goodness and golden brown (even with burnt bits) and it’s sitting right next to the jub where i make my morning coffee…i am going to eat cake for breakfast lol (and so i did this very morning)

What did you do lately that was ‘out of the box’ or a ‘little bit different’ perhaps a wee bit eccentric my arty friends? Do tell…. did you eat cake for breakfast too?

This little owl was drawn on brown kraft paper, I painted the underneath with stripes of white gesso acrylic paint and drew the owl with pencil, pastels, marker pens and adjustments were made in PS4 with a Wacom Tablet

In the very near future….Don’t Shoot Owl is going to make a surprise appearance on another tshirt…one that might appeal to wildlife photographers :) ...yes…a new wildlife smile baby photographer tee is on the way :) *

what i love about living an authentic life are all the wonderful correlations and people you meet and can share with and listen to, learn from and join with...it's really special to be a part of living when you are fully living and participating....even tho I find that difficult sometimes, the joy and the triumph of overcoming obstacles that arise daily in life, can be the most life generating experience of all. The humbling moments of admission where you've been bigger than your own ego and need to pull your head in, these happen all too often, but every time they do, I learn something fresh and new about myself, and about being gentler on other people.....the busier I become, the more forgiving i am of others who are busy.

Authenticity is a technical term in existentialist philosophy, and is also used in the philosophy of art and psychology. In philosophy, the conscious self is seen as coming to terms with being in a material world and with encountering external forces, pressures and influences which are very different from, and other than, itself. Authenticity is the degree to which one is true to one's own personality, spirit, or character, despite these pressures. Different types of Existentialist philosophers see this process in different ways. (from Wikipedia)

Last night I enjoyed the movie 'eat, pray, love'...i do admit to falling asleep in the early part of the movie (which i'll call the first third) possible because it felt somehow mundane...but i experienced an awakening by mid second third, with the fresh introduction of wisdom dawning and making it's debut.....i certainly felt i could walk with the actors through the rest of the movie, and find dot points in my own life, enough of them that were relative to keep me entertained and not only that, but find application for the wisdom in my own walk or journey.

I realised that authenticity breathes life into me and joy...it brings with it new revelations, discoveries and a bonding with others of like mind, and that's what i truly loved about this movie.

People were there telling their own painful stories, sharing a testimony of how they'd failed in life to produce the desired result or to reach expectations, and all the tragedy and loss that comes with failure....and yet, the spirit goes on and delivers, rather than giving up, it's overcoming doubt and failure, as a direct response to darkness and despondency.....regrets are useless, only in that if we don't act upon them, we are unchanged....if a regret is looked at in a wholesome light, it can be used as a teacher and a bearer of light....if a difficult situation has all but destroyed you, you can learn from it and change to adapt to a better way, that doesn't mean becoming somebody you aren't, it means growing into somebody better and more giving, forgiving and understanding....for all in all, I am drawn to authenticity, to the person who is striving to reach heaven in an unmarred state, but all peoples are teachers for me in this life, and all are students...and i regard us all as such....so if regard all teachers, all as students....life is learning....by the end of it, we will all have grown.

The movie reminded me about balance, by drawing an intersection and looking at where the lines cross...it showed me in a visual sense, how out of balance i become at times, when many times, i spend nothing on myself......i am in truth denying myself the pleasure of 'being' and 'doing nothing' which often leads to so many good things, like 'inspiration' and 'creating'....for when i am giving too much in the direction of others, i become an 'empty vessel' and need times of refreshing and meditation, times of withdrawal....to become balanced again. It would be so much better for all, if one was to be balanced in general each and every day...but sometimes the shifts and changes, the unpredictability of life, prevents us. The other beautiful lesson this movie taught me, which is a wonderful truth in and of itself, is i think what they termed 'tuti'...someone please correct me if i have that wrong....but it was the realisation perhaps that, when one goes in search of helping themselves it often results in 'tuti', or 'helping everyone else'... maybe that is a guideline for knowing whether we are on the right track

so it is, that for me, 'the unexamined life is not worth living' Socrates

sincerity and authenticity are very important to me

Upon further meditation and discussion it occurs to me that I am born in essence to be the seeker and to meet the seeker (being both student and teacher/seeing all others as both student and teacher), to learn how to live and let live is so important, to learn how to be gentle, many are happy and content not to be seekers, but i seek a different path for wholeness is determined by the decisions i make, by the thoughts i think which determine the places i plant my feet, that is my journey, not everyones...loving is learning to nurture or let something die, wisdom is knowing the right time... this ties in very much with my creative journey and the essence of that which is expressed now and which will be expressed in the future, for it is all about making these connections, and having these meditations, and many times, the works i create are coming from the place of discovery

the message is twofold….for little girls, very simply it’s sending a clear message of positive reinforcement, were it to be something they have in their room or receive for a birthday, i just wanted to give them a boost and a reminder to love themselves and live life to the full. To go with that line of thinking I’ve included the beautiful Music Box Dancer video on youtube by The Wiggles with a video of a little girl, a bit like this one, dancing….and The Wiggles, Dorothy the Dinosaur, and Captain Feathersword are all there too for your viewing and listening pleasure.
do you remember the music box dancer in your music box…? you would open up the box, and there she was, she would pop up as you lifted the lid…in her little tutu, pirouetting round and round to the sound of the ‘music box dancer’ or some other pretty tune, she kept guard over all your hidden treasures in the jewellery box, I’ve tried to recreate the look and feel of that little icon here with her white tulle tutu skirt beneath, princess-style sleeves and golden hand-beaded bodice and pretty golden string of pearls she is both young and innocent, wide eyed…but also older and wiser, so that I hope she would appeal to girls of every age and in every stage of life
the other side of the coin, I want to encourage grown up girls who have struggled and find life hard going at times, as a reminder that they are beautiful, that one can develop and nurture resilience and strength through everyday focus and meditation on positive messages and looking for the good in life…even if it’s only miniscule, it can grow… and to go with that line of thought, i have included a link to Missy Higgins song, which I love so much called Sugar Cane which is about the baby ballerina that lives inside us

the year was 1972 and just for fun here’s a pic of me when i was 7 and just tiny tot at ballet (i’d been going since I was 4 years old..our first review I was in “The Fairy Around the Christmas tree and we wore a white singlet with little white scarves all sewn into it to make the skirt and of course a little halo of silver tinsel about the head lol) we looked like baby elephants, so ungraceful, but all the mums and dads and we ourselves thought we were very wonderful!

which one am I? ... the littlest one on the far right at the back…that’s me….one of the other girls is my best friend (from childhood) we’ve lost touch now…i won’t give her name, but she was/played Amy the Bear in Bananas in Pyjamas for a few years.. she and her sister were magic dancers and always got the lead roles, i was forever in obscurity, in their shadow….and even here…although the smallest of the lot…there i be, right in the back…where I’m most comfortable :)

and one more for the road…can you believe this is me!! lol ..and i must mention that my mum painted the pegboard behind me there, and we’d hang our toys from it to tidy up…using golf tees in the holes as pegs…so innovative and clever she is…full of ‘making do with whatever we had’ kind of ideas…
